12 Environmental Effects of Coal Mining

One of the most obvious (albeit perhaps least harmful) environmental effects of coal mining is noise pollution. Coal mining is a loud, day- and night-long process that disrupts the lives of those in the surrounding communities, reduces the quality of life and can go on for decades. #11 Loss Of Wildlife

Negative Effects of Coal Mining TheWorldCounts

We know it but coal is such a cheap energy source that we don’t want to let go of it. The negative effects of coal mining cannot be disputed: Destruction of Landscapes and Habitats: Strip mining also known as surface mining, involves the stripping away of earth and rocks to reach the coal underneath. If a mountain happens to be standing in the way of a coal seam within, it will be blasted or levelled effectively

Effects Of Coal Mining On The Environment

Environmentally damaging surface mining methods have overtaken underground mining as the predominant way of extracting coal. The environmental impact from surface mining includes habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, groundwater pollution and air pollution caused by dust particulates. Visible from outer space

Engulfed in a Toxic Cloud: The Effects of Coal Mining

The continued growth of coal mining has left communities with pervasive and irreparable damage. Until recently, however, the effects of coal on human health have been largely ignored and mining has continued without many appeals for improvement. In both the

Environmental cumulative effects of coal underground

2009-9-1  Environmental cumulative effects of coal underground mining Unlike open mining, underground mining extracting coal resources through the wells, usually leads to land subsidence, water resources destruction, soil erosion, air pollution and biodiversity decrease.

STUDY OF THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF COAL MINING ON

2016-2-7  For coal dust workers and non coal workers the age ranges between 15-45 and above with medium age of 32 years old.Percentage of coal drillers, helpers, coal loaders (Labors) and coal transporters were 60%, 15%, 20% and 5% respectively. The total strength of coal workers was further divided into four age group table 4 3.3.

Anthropogenic Effects of Coal Mining on Ecological

Mining induced anthropogenic activities are well-known causes of contamination of ecological resources. The produced effluents have drastic effects by changing the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the concerned resources. The Central Indus Basin is a well-known coal regime, where more than 160 mines are active at present.

Effects of Coal Mining Activities on Soil Properties

The extensive coal mining in the area altered physico-chemical properties of the soil. Sites near coal mining areas were heavily contaminated with all the measured heavy metals. The average concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cd and Cr were higher compared to the critical soil concentrations.

The Social and Environmental Consequences of Coal

2013-3-12  The largest water quality problem associated with coal mining is undoubtedly acid mine drainage (AMD). Acid mine drainage consists of three interrelated problems: first, the pyrite in the rock gives rise to water with a low pH. This acid water in turn mobilizes heavy metals from the environment, in the mine or in the river course from the sediments (in Witbank, for example, heavy metals from steel manufacture, vanadium and chrome are all present within polluted fiver courses). Thirdly, treating the water with calcium to raise the pH, makes the water more saline, a problem that requires expensive and energy intensive reverse osmosis or similar processes. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to avoid acid mine drainage. Rock once broken up is open to oxygen, which reacts with the pyrite in both the coal and the surrounding rocks. Once water flows over this, acid mine drainage follows. In the Ermelo area, there are cases of rehabilitated open cast and underground mines decanting acid water 5 to 20 years after closure. Acid mine

The effects of coal mining in Alberta would ripple

Coal mining irreparably harms water. The water flowing down the Eastern Slopes sustains the food production, drinking water supplies, recreation, tourism, and ecosystems of the foothills and prairies in Southern Alberta and on into Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Open-pit coal mining would be detrimental to both water quality and access.

Effects of coal mining on the evolution of groundwater

The mining industry, especially coal mining, may severely affect the spatial and temporal evolution of groundwater. To provide a potential model outlining the hydrogeochemical evolution of groundwater as influenced by coal mining, a multi-layer groundwater system in a coal mining area was investigated.

2013-3-12  Coal mining played a supportive role as provider of energy to the growing gold mining industry and indeed, many collieries were historically and are today owned by gold mining companies. To these coal mine owners it was more important to keep the costs of their own energy inputs low, than to profit from coal mining itself4. The coal

Positive And Negative Effects Of Coal Mining Essay

Social problems include the social and health complications that arise from the effects of the use of coal and coal mining. The mining of coal occurs in many ways, but is almost always damaging to the environment. After the mines are finished with, the area should be restored by the mining companies, which often doesn't happen.
